Here is a selection of Lightwriter users, showing a wide range of ages and conditions:

Beth is a lively teenager with a lot to say. Her enthusiasm is infectious and her energy seems boundless. Invited all over the world to talk about her life and experiences, Beth is unstoppable.

Ross and his kit

8 year old Ross lost his speech at the age of 2 following surgery on a brain tumour. He then used a symbol board to communicate and started using a Lightwriter from the age of 4. Ross's mother says "I don't know what we would have done without the Lightwriter. It has been amazing: it's completely changed his way of life. He is now able to take part in conversations more easily and ask all sorts of questions - some of which we just can't answer, for instance he really loves cars and this morning he wrote a question about Henry Ford, asking why he said you could have his car in any colour as long as it was black".
Ross is in mainstream school and some of his fellow pupils have been taught Makaton sign language to communicate with Ross as an alternative to using the Lightwriter.

Toby Churchill

I'm Toby and I shouldn't need any further introduction! I lost my speech in my early twenties as a result of encephalitis and designed the first Lightwriter for my own use over 30 years ago. I am in a wheelchair and have the use of my left arm. Over the last 25 years I have used almost every model of Lightwriter that we have produced.

Marie with her Lightwriter

Marie is 16 years old and is a girl on a mission to be independent in all aspects of her life. Marie struggles to be understood by people who do not know her and at times this could affect her school, home, and most importantly her social life!

Maureen & Lightwriter

Hello my name is Maureen and I am in my early 50s. I have Motor Neurone Disease (ALS). Since I got my Lightwriter in December it's made such a difference to my life, especially as my speech has worsened to the point where I can't really speak at all. Gordon, my husband, and I have succeeded in feeding it directly through a small amplifier so I can communicate with my folk dance club. It's enabling me to continue to co-ordinate our show programme and rehearsals. I've even put one of my folk dance tunes on and have customised the Lightwriter's 'Buzz' sound to be a musical scale.

Pete & Anna
Hello, my name is Pete. I'm in my middle fifties and have been married to Anna for over 31 years. My speech has almost gone through Motor Neurone Disease (ALS), which I have had for over I4 years. I use a wheelchair out of doors but am fortunate in being able to use a walking frame indoors. My Lightwriter, which I have had for 10 years, is invaluable for social events outside the home with friends and others. I am fortunate in that Anna still understands most of what I say at home.
Steven & Pam
Steven and Pam are both Lightwriter users, and met each other in their schooldays and have recently got engaged. They now live in a small purpose-built hostel run by the local Social Services. Steven uses a wheelchair and uses a combined SL35 with MiniPrinter mounted on his chair, and Pam uses an SL35. Pam has had her Lightwriter since 2000 and Steven since 2001. They are both great characters & are full of fun.
Patrick
My name is Patrick and I am in my early thirties. I have had Cerebral Palsy from birth, which means I am in a wheelchair and I have no speech as the result of it. I have been using my scanning Lightwriter now for 1 year. As I have no hand control for using a normal keyboard, I use my Lightwriter via two head switches through a scanning keyboard displayed on the Lightwriter. I find my Lightwriter invaluable for communicating my thoughts in educational and social situations.
David and his SL35/Cherry
My Name is David, I am 68 years old and married 46 years to Helen. I lost my speech to Motor Neurone Disease (ALS) about 8 months ago. I use my SL35 Cherry Lightwriter when we have friends round, and for talking to my Wife, also for the phone. I drive my new S-Type 3 Litre Jaguar, I use 3 & 4 wheel Trolleys, for upstairs and downstairs. My hobbies were Motorcycle Trials, when I was 16, and motorcycles in general later, that spread to cars. I was apprenticed to a Maintenance Fitter with Morris Motors followed by two years Army
